FAQ › Taichung Travel
Where should I stay in Taichung? Which area is most convenient for a first visit?
Quick answer
Pick an area by your plans: stay around Taichung Station if you're arriving by train or exploring the old town; Xitun near Fengjia if the night market is your focus; the 7th Redevelopment Zone for the National Taichung Theater and department stores; the CMP Block / Calligraphy Greenway area for strolling and creative shops. If you want to cover all the sights and need easy parking, North District, just north of the city center, is the most balanced choice.
What else should you know?
- The area around Taichung Station (Central and East Districts) is Taichung's old town. Taichung Railway Station is here, with Miyahara, the Second Public Market and the Lyuchuan Canal nearby. There are plenty of budget hotels, and it's the easiest base for train travel.
- Fengjia Night Market is around Feng Chia University in Xitun District and is one of the largest night markets in Taiwan. It's busiest from early evening on; crowds are heavy at night and parking nearby is hard to find.
- The 7th Redevelopment Zone and Taiwan Boulevard area (Xitun District) has the National Taichung Theater, Maple Garden, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Far Eastern Department Store, with more high-rise international chain hotels.
- The CMP Block and Calligraphy Greenway area (West District) has the CMP Block (Qinmei Greenway), Calligraphy Greenway, Shen Ji New Village and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, great for walking, browsing creative shops and cafés.
- North District has the Yizhong Street shopping area, Taichung Park, the National Museum of Natural Science and Chungyo Department Store. It sits just north of the city center, so Fengjia, the 7th Redevelopment Zone, Shuinan and the old town are all close.
- The Shuinan Economic and Trade Park sits on the site of the former Shuinan Airport. It has Taichung Central Park, the Taichung International Exhibition Center and the Taichung Green Museumbrary, the place for exhibitions, New Year's Eve events and letting kids run around.
- Driving to Taichung: street parking in popular downtown areas is hard to find, so before booking, check whether the hotel has its own or a partner parking lot and how parking is charged.
